$1 million gift endows ‘Say Yes’ fund

UNC alumnus, business executive and former chair of UNC’s Board of Trustees Nelson Schwab III '67 has committed $1 million to the University’s Institute for the Arts and Humanities (IAH) in the College of Arts and Sciences to benefit faculty in fine arts, humanities and humanistic social sciences departments in the college.

The gift will establish the Nelson Schwab “Say Yes” Fund in the institute and enable department chairs to respond to faculty requests as they work to teach more students with fewer resources in the face of significant budget restraints.
Schwab, a member of the IAH Advisory Board, is a managing partner and co-founder of merchant banking firm Carousel Capital in Charlotte, N.C.

He served on the boards of visitors both for the University and Kenan-Flagler Business School. A member of the Board of Trustees from 2001 to 2009, he was chair from 2005 to 2007.

Bernard Gray Receives 1851 Outstanding Alumni Award
Special recognition goes out to Mr. Bernard Gray ’72, this year’s recipient of the 1851 Outstanding Alumni Award.   The award was presented to Mr. Gray at the 40th reunion of the class of 1971 this fall.  Berny has played an integral role in the house’s success through his generous time and effort, whether in the form of advising the Chapter or DKE International or helping the rebuilding of the DKE house in Chapel Hill (twice!).
